let number of girls is x, number of boys would be:x+8
5(x+8-x)=x+8;
x=32,which is number of girls.
x+8=40,number of boys.

Let x = number of boys and y = number of girls
Then, x = y + 8 and x = 5 * ( x - y )
Solving the two equations
x = 40 and y = 32
