There are three boxes box1, box2 and box3 containing gold, silver and mixture of silver and gold respectively.

  • Each of the three boxes contain a label on them describing the contents.
  • Mr. Hurricane comes and mess up all labels. Now each box is labeled with the name which it exactly doesn’t contain.

You are given only one chance to open a box and you should guess all the remaining two box contents correctly. Which box will you choose to open keeping in mind that all the three boxes are labeled wrong?

There are only 2 ways of wrong labeling of all 3 boxes as shown in below table.
Line one- right, is the boxes with correct label, GOLD for box1, SILVER for box2 and MIX for box3. Line two and three describe the options of wrong labeling of all the boxes.
right GOLD SILVER MIX
wrong1 SILVER MIX GOLD
wrong2 MIX GOLD SILVER
By selecting any label you can guess the rest of the boxes correctly. For example, if you chose to open the box labeled Silver, you may get gold or mix in the box. If it is gold, go by wrong1 line for other boxes, it means the box labeled Mix will contain silver and the box labeled Gold will contain mix. If it is mix in the box, go by wrong2 line- the box labeled Gold will contain silver and the box labeled Mix will contain gold.
So you may chose any label and find the correct boxes easily.

Someone shows you two boxes and he tells you that one of these boxes contains two times as much as the other one, but he does not tell you which one this is. He lets you choose one of these boxes, and opens it. It turns out to be filled with $10. Now he gives you the opportunity to choose the other box instead of the current one (and skip the $10 of the first box), because the second box could contain twice as much (i.e. $20).

Should you choose the second box, or should you stick to your first choice to maximize the expected amount of money?

There is a box in which distinct numbered balls have been kept. You have to pick two balls randomly from the lot.

If someone is offering you a 2 to 1 odds that the numbers will be relatively prime, for example
If the balls you picked had the numbers 6 and 13, you lose $1.
If the balls you picked had the numbers 5 and 25, you win $2.

Will you accept that bet?
