During a recent police investigation, Chief Inspector Stone was interviewing five local villains to try and identify who stole Mrs Archer's cake from the mid-summers fayre. Below is a summary of their statements:

Arnold: it wasn't Edward
it was Brian

Brian: it wasn't Charles
it wasn't Edward

Charles: it was Edward
it wasn't Arnold

Derek: it was Charles
it was Brian

Edward: it was Derek
it wasn't Arnold

It was well known that each suspect told exactly one lie. Can you determine who stole the cake?

Charles stole Mrs Archer's cake from the mid-summers fayre.
Here is how;

1) Brian: it wasn't Charles it wasn't Edward
One of the statement is untrue (each suspect told exactly one lie).
Meaning The thief HAS TO BE EITHER Charles OR Edward

2) Arnold: it wasn't Edward; it was Brian
We know from above that - all other than Charles and Edward are innocent. Using this we conclude that Arnold's "IT was Brian" is a lie - Making the other statement "It wasn't Edward" as TRUE.
Meaning Edward is innocent.

That leaves Charles who must be the thief.

Madan placed a Rs2000 note on the table and left for work.

When he returned back he found that the money was gone.

There were only 3 people in his house that day: the cook, the maid and the electrician.

The cook said he put the note under a book on the table to keep it safe.

The man checked and it is no longer there.

The maid said she moved the note to the inside of the book between pages 14 and 15 while she was cleaning.

Again, the man checked the book and there was nothing between page 14 and 15.

The electrician said he saw the note sticking out of the book and he moved it between page 15 and 16 to keep it safe.
